Blade Smithing Knife 1
Project type
Blade Smithing and Materials and Metallurgy Engineering
Date
Aug-Oct 2024
Location
Colorado School of Mines
This is the first knife that I made for my BladeSmithing class at Mines. It is a standard Bowie knife with some jimping and a wooden handle. The process for this knife required me to first use the band saw and grinder to profile and bevel the blade. Then it was hand-sanded and heat-treated. Post-heat treat, I made the handle also on the bandsaw and grinders and used brass pins and epoxy to secure the handle to the knife. The last steps were some more hand sanding and making the sheathe out of Kydex. The Kydex sheathe was made using a very hot press, a heat gun, and rivets(to secure the sheathe).
I learned a lot from this knife and used all of it when making knife 2. I like this knife quite a bit even though it undergoes a lot of rusting because it is 01 tool steel.
The blue dye on the knife is used to outline the profile and cuts/lines we want to make on the knife.
