Aluminum Derby Car
Project type
Manufacturing
Date
August 2023
Location
Colorado School of Mines
My 2 teammates and I created this aluminum derby car for a manufacturing class. It was designed in SolidWorks and we used manufacturing techniques to get everything down to the 100th of an inch. SolidWorks and GD&T techniques were also used to determine proper tolerancing, where the tolerance was from, and what about it was under tolerance. We used the CNC to create our spoiler and the laser engraver on our skid plate. We used Bridgeport mills, lathes, a bandsaw, and a hand press to make the car, wheels, bushings, and axles. In addition, after milling the holes we then threaded them manually with the help of the mill. All of that put together created the car and drawings that you see below.
